An orangery is a popular addition to any home.
As mentioned in our blog about the history of the orangery, they add a sense of rurality and nature to the home as well as adding light and air.
They differ from a conservatory in regards to their price, but they are a much more solid choice. Moreover, they are usually made from glass, timber and brick.
What Could I Use An Orangery For?
As an orangery is built on the ground floor, they are often used as a dining room or additional living space. However, they are also ideal as a bedroom, office or playroom.
They are usually bigger than a conservatory in size and have great potential to serve the whole family. Again, they are light, spacious and airy all year round.
Are They Ideal?
Of course, an orangery is an ideal addition to the home. However, there are small factors to be made aware of. If you are using the space to house screens like televisions and laptops, the sun may cause a glare.
Screen dividers might be a worthy investment, or built-in window blinds to keep the sunshine from getting in the way!
The timber beams and base can be an eyesore, so they may need to be covered up or painted over. Hence, further work may be required after the structure is built.
The wood will also need to be maintained to ensure it does not rot or wear away. The wood stain may also fade, meaning this needs to be kept on top of.
On the plus side, self-cleaning glass may be an option for the windows or roof, meaning little maintenance is required.
Orangeries are a smart investment. Not only do they provide you with extra living space, but they also add value to your property should you ever decide to sell.
